Career Lessons You Can Learn from Reality TV
It’s hard to escape reality TV these days. And if you are like many people, you might find yourself addicted to at least one reality show (although you may be too embarrassed to admit that). And while this may seem like a mindless escape, there may actually be some work-related lessons you can learn from studying reality shows.
This article shares some insights. Among the takeaways:
Alpha females get ahead. Reality shows are filled with dominating women who aren’t shy about demanding what they want. And while it’s probably not a good idea to start flipping over tables or engaging in hair-pulling catfights, being a little more assertive about getting what you want might be helpful.
Strong characters stand out. As any reality fan knows, wallflowers don’t get much air time. If you don’t speak up, you will quickly fade into the background. The same is true in business—you often must be vocal for people to realize what you are contributing.
You must be resilient to survive. Reality stars tend to start—and abandon—business ventures in the blink of an eye. They always seem to have a new project in the works, and when one fails, they come up with another idea within a few episodes. While you may not necessarily be planning to launch a clothing line or a new type of cosmetics, you may find the need to reinvent yourself professionally at least a few times in your career in order to adapt to the changing marketplace.
