How to Handle a Workplace Bully
Workplace bullying has gotten a lot of press lately, with many sources indicating it is becoming more common—for example, this article claims workplace bullying has increased by as much as 70 percent. But many people still don't know exactly how to recognize a workplace bully—or what to do about it. It's important to pay attention to this issue, though, because workplace bullying can be dangerous to both your career and your mental health.
This article provides several examples of different types of workplace bullies.
So what do you do if you do have a bully in your workplace? First, try bringing it up in a light-hearted, non-confrontational way. It’s possible the person just thinks they are being intense or assertive and doesn't realize they're being a bully.
If that doesn't work, you may need to take your concerns to HR or your supervisor. (Be sure to document examples of the bullying behavior you have experienced or witnessed.)
Of course, things may be a little trickier if the bully is your supervisor—and many workplace bullying situations do involve managers who abuse or over-exert their power. Here is some advice for dealing with a bully manager.
The most important thing, though, is that you don't tolerate workplace bullying or let it affect your wellbeing or career. Even if you aren't the direct target of the bullying, you need to speak up or take action to bring the bullying to an end.

I work with workplace aggression even bullying as a consultants. My clients are the aggressors and their managers. It's critical to plan any confrontation or conversation one wants to have with someone who is being aggressive. If you don't know motivation or intentions, then you need to be prepared to have a difficult conversation. What are your goals? What are you wiling to risk? What are you not willing to risk? These are questions that need to be asked.
