Organize Your Own Office Olympics
Office Olympics—made popular in an episode of the televisions series "The Office"—can be a great way to build camaraderie among your co-workers while also adding a fun break to the long workday, especially during bad weather seasons when everyone starts to go a bit stir crazy.
Yes, it's also a way to goof off a little on company time, so you may need to use some creativity in convincing your boss to support the idea. Many offices use this as a fundraiser for a local charity.
Depending on how much time/energy you can devote to the event and the number of participants, you can really go all out to get in the spirit of things. Assign each department or team to be a country and let them create their own flags and perhaps even uniforms (ideally these should be made out of office supplies or accessories).
Then you need to come up with some cool and creative events. Some favorites: office chair races, trash bin basketball and timed office tasks (say, seeing who can answer the phone and forward a call the fastest).
This blog offers some other ideas for fun office Olympic events.
Have you ever held an office Olympics? What events did you include?
