Why Diversity is the Key to Success
Office professionals know how difficult it can be to get along with coworkers. Some are just plain weird or strange or annoying, but this doesn’t mean they don’t add value to the workforce. In fact, many of our oddest colleagues happen to be excellent employees though they are substandard coworkers.
Learn to embrace people who are different than you are. Though you may disagree with a colleague’s politics or sports allegiances, know that diversity is always a beneficial attribute because it leads to a confluence of ideas rather than a stream of sameness. Being challenged is an important part of life, though it may feel incredibly frustrating on a Monday afternoon. Effective managers and leaders know that different people are an asset and not a liability.
This article explains, “Leaders must recognize that there are many ways to find success, and that diversity of thought creates serendipity. Those who earn serendipity see what others don’t, do what others won’t, and keep pushing when prudence says quit.”
Part of seeing things anew requires being exposed to those who see life, work and challenges differently than you do. Effective leaders covet diversity because they know it brings with it innovation and creativity that can’t be manufactured any other way. So learn to appreciate those who don’t think like you do, they just may be the key to your success.
