Why Respect is So Important in the Workplace

To paraphrase the classic song, we all just want a little respect. It doesn’t seem like too much to ask, but apparently in some workplaces respect is all too rare. According to a recent article, disrespect is one of the top career-limiting habits.
So what's the problem? Perhaps everyone's so busy trying to get ahead that they don't give much thought to niceties like respect. Or maybe they think being aggressive and assertive is more important. Whatever the reason, this lack of respect doesn't just make for impolite workplaces—it also can end up negatively affecting your career. Here's why:
- Respect encourages communication and collaboration. If a co-worker feels like you respect them and their opinions, they are more likely to share ideas with you and will be more receptive to working with you on projects.
- What comes around goes around. The underling you diss today may be your supervisor tomorrow—and you can bet they will remember how you treated them.
- You need to give to get. You can't expect respect from your co-workers if you aren't giving them the same courtesy.
- Finally, it's just the right thing to do. Remember the old adage: "It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice."
Do you think workplaces are becoming more disrespectful? How do you help establish a more respectful working environment?
